FathomNet (formerly Ocean Vision AI) is a collaborative research and development program that streamlines access to artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to advance the analysis of ocean visual data. The long-term vision of FathomNet is a central hub that leverages state-of-the-art AI algorithm development and broad community engagement to automate image and video data pipelines from source to repository.

The FathomNet Portal is an online, collaborative tool for the end-to-end AI-assisted processing of ocean imagery. Users can collaboratively upload and analyze imagery, apply and train custom and existing machine learning models for detection and classification, associate metadata, and export and search annotations, all in one web-based platform.

Through the Portal, users are connected to FathomNet’s community-supported data pipelines, making it easy for researchers to process their imagery and contribute to open-source repositories. Researchers can also access a global community of ocean enthusiasts to assist with labeling and verification of annotations through the mobile game FathomVerse. By incorporating state-of-the-art artificial intelligence, an easy-to-use and intuitive interface, and best practices in human-computer interactions, the FathomNet Portal accelerates the analysis of ocean visual data to reveal actionable insights.
